Job Summary:
The College Counselor provides comprehensive counseling and guidance services to college students, assisting them in academic planning, career development, and personal growth. The counselor helps students navigate the college experience, providing support and guidance in areas such as course selection, major exploration, study skills, and coping strategies.
Responsibilities:
1. Conduct individual counseling sessions with college students to address academic, career, and personal concerns.
2. Assess students' interests, abilities, and goals to aid in the development of personalized academic plans.
3. Collaborate with students in exploring and selecting appropriate educational programs and majors.
4. Provide guidance and resources for students regarding college admissions, scholarships, and financial aid opportunities.
5. Assist students in developing effective study skills, time management techniques, and test-taking strategies.
6. Offer support and assistance to students experiencing academic challenges, including referral to academic support services.
7. Facilitate career exploration and assist students in identifying potential career paths and job opportunities.
8. Organize and conduct workshops and group counseling sessions on topics relevant to college success and personal development.
9. Maintain accurate and confidential student records, documenting counseling sessions and progress made by students.
10. Collaborate with faculty, administrators, and other campus departments to provide a coordinated support system for students.
11. Stay updated on current trends and best practices in college counseling and higher education.
Qualifications:
1. Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, or a related field.
2. State licensure or certification as a counselor, therapist, or social worker (if required by state regulations).
3. Demonstrated experience in providing counseling services to college students or young adults.
4. Strong knowledge of college admissions processes, financial aid resources, and academic planning.
5. Familiarity with career development theories and ability to assist students in career exploration.
6. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish rapport with diverse student populations.
7. Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical guidelines in counseling practice.
8. Proficiency in using computer applications and student information systems for recordkeeping purposes.
9. Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
10. Flexibility to work occasional evenings or weekends to accommodate student needs.
11. Commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and social justice on campus.
